I picked open a mortice lock in Moseley this week and also picked some locks opened in the Mailbox, in Birmingham city centre, amongst other jobs. I mention the Moseley job, because after completing the job, I noticed that the euro cylinders fitted on the other door were the wrong size and sticking out. These are the locks fitted to upvc doors and should be fitted so that the external part of the cylinder is flush with the handle. You can get away with sticking out 5mm or so, but any more and the thieves can just snap them off. They do this very quietly and very quickly. They could be in your house within about 30 seconds! There are a few ways of preventing this, the first being to make sure you have the correct size upvc locks fitted to your upvc door.
The second is to have sash jammers fitted to your upvc door. I've mentioned these before, but I really do think they're a good idea. Trust me, as a locksmith, there's little worse than picking a lock, only to find the door's got sash jammers fitted on the back of it. It's a nearly as bad as picking a lock on a wooden door, then finding out it's bolted!
The third is to replace your locks with anti-snap cylinders. These used to be very expensive, but ICL now have a very good, anti-snap, bump-resistant euro cylinder out, at a reasonable price.
The other job I mentioned was the one at the Mailbox, in Birmingham. I really do hate driving round Birmingham city centre, but at least there was somewhere to park at the Mailbox. Just a case of picking open and replacing 3 locks there. I enjoy working at these big shopping centres though, the same as I like working at some of these big shops. It's always interseting seeing all the bits you don't normally see, behind the scenes.
