Had to change some locks and an antique brass door handle in Sutton Coldfield this week. They were on one of the nicest doors I've seen in a long time, with an old, original lock fitted. The lock was very similar to an Adams Rite type lock with screw in cylinders, but about 50 years old. The cylinders they had in weren't keyed alike, but the new ones I put in were, so both sides work now off just the one key. They didn't want anything replaced on the actual door, as the door was french polished.
I had a bit of a problem getting the screw in cylinders, as they were brass, but people only seem to stock chrome ones these days, but I got them after a bit of phoning around. They also needed the external handle replacing, but didn't want normal brass as it wasn't in keeping with the rest of the door furniture. They also didn't want just some cheap handle from a DIY store. What I've done is order them in a bespoke door handle in an antique brass finish. I couldn't order a standard one, because the one being replaced has a square rose and the standard one has a round rose, so I'm getting one made especially. It should hopefully be ready in about four weeks.
This a service we now offer and can either replace just one handle with very high quality items, to virtually any finish or as many as you want. A good alternative to replacing your doors is to just replace your door furniture. You would be suprised at the results!
